The Story

  • I'm sure Dwight Howard has gotten many drunk dials in his life... I suppose it comes with the territory of being the man.
    Without knowing for sure, I feel pretty confident and safe in saying that this was the first time he's gotten a drunk dial from one of his bosses. By now most people have heard the story about outgoing Magic CEO Bob VanderWeide possibly drunk dialing Howard.

    However there might be more to this story. Terezowens.com broke the story that VanderWeide could possibly have been stepping down from his position with the Magic not due to the drunk dial but because he was cheating on his wife. Normally that's a big deal in a public setting, but this time it's magnified even more.
    Why? Because VanderWeide's wife Cheri DeVos VanderWeide also happens to be the daughter of Rich DeVos, who happens to own Amway, the company which happens to own the Orlando Magic.
    Now we have no way of knowing if this is true or not but to steal a line from ESPN....come on man. You are set up to possibly be the owner of the team one day and you go and pull a stunt like this. To say we're not surprised that he may be stepping down is a bit of an understatement.
    The couple lives in Michigan, and has five children.

  • UPDATE: 09-30-2011: Laura Govan recently tweeted a photo of how her fiance, Gilbert Arenas, picked her up from the airport. Check the photo to the right, it's pretty obvious which one it is. Seriously Gilbert? You don't think that's insulting at all? Dressing up as a friggin' pimp to pickup the woman you intend to marry? You're essentially calling her a hooker. Though, based on how Govan reacted (posting the photo to Twitter for the world to see) she doesn't mind being called a prostitute.

    09-20-2011: Laura Govan recently confirmed that she is, despite numerous breakups over the years, still Gilbert Arenas' fiance. One has to wonder if, with his basketball career seemingly in the tail end, he is simply making the best of a bad situation.

    07-02-2011: We all have our opinions of the VH1 tv show 'Basketball Wives', but Gilbert Arenas has a different perspective than most of us, given that his ex-fiance, Laura Govan, is set to appear on the upcoming season. Arenas is suing Shed Media and Laura Govan for, among other things, trademark infringement and misappropriation of his likeness in an attempt to block the upcoming season of 'Basketball Wives'. Arenas is attempting to make the case that 'Basketball Wives' is not protected by the right to free expression and that the "Defendants are not ‘expressing’ anything other than their attempt to profit from plaintiff’s fame".

    According to the Washington Post, Laura Govan has not heard from Arenas in quite some time. Govan's publicist Laura Wright said, in an e-mailed statement, "Govan and the children feel like they have been abandoned."

    Arenas also recently indicated to the press that he had, since at least Thanksgiving, been living with former teammate Nick Young. No word yet on which of his new Orlando Magic teammates he has become an unwelcome house guest for.

    Also worthy of note, Govan is four months pregnant and, according to rumors, Gilbert has entirely cut her, and their children, off from support payments.
  • Fast Facts: The two have been together on and off for eight years, after meeting in 2001, while Gilbert was still playing with the Warriors. Laura was a public relations rep for the Sacremento Kings at the time. She later went on to work with the Los Angeles Lakers, and also work briefly as a personal assistant for Shaquille O'Neal. Laura and Gilbert has two kids together(daughter Izela and son Alijah), and are currently expecting their third child due December 24th.
  • Fun Facts: Gilbert and Laura originally dated for a couple of years before they broke up when Gilbert signed with Washington. After the end of the relationship, Gilbert was surprised to find out that Laura was pregnant with their first child in 2003. Despite the separation, Gilbert made efforts to take a leave from the Wizards to be present for the birth of their daughter. Shortly after the birth, the two began fighting about custody and support of the daughter, which could not be resolved amicably. Once Laura realized that an agreement wouldn’t be reached easily, she hired a San Francisco law firm with the intent of serving Gilbert with a subpoena during a nationally televised game. Gilbert caught wind of this information a couple weeks before the game, and worked in conjunction with the team to devise a story that he had the flu, and was unable to play in the name of preventing public humiliation. Even though he avoided being served on TV, Gilbert was forced to spend much of 2004 hiding from process servers, who on more than one occasion served one of Gilbert’s teammates in a case of mistaken identity. After much turmoil and frustration, Gilbert and Laura began speaking and negotiated terms of custody and child support. Gilbert bought Laura her own house near him so that he could be involved, while also providing her a car and financial allowance. After meeting face to face as part of the deal, they began speaking and ultimately dating again. The two have been together since, and are engaged to be married.

The Story

  • Time Together: Rumor has it that Dwight Howard is dating Christine Vest, and that the two have been together for the better part of a year. As the people who broke the pictures of the two together over at theybf.com point out, the picture of the two walking in Paris near the Eiffel Tower is the first time they've been photographed in public together.
  • Fast Facts: Christine is an aspiring singer with a couple of her own songs that can be found over at YouTube. In the video on the right, called "The Truth," she's clearly singing about 2008 Finals MVP Paul Pierce, right?
    Christine also played basketball at Chico State, and says she wants a career working with kids. So far she sounds like a cooler chick than either of Dwight Howard's other two girls featured on the site both here and here.

    Here's where we will speculate and rile up Magic fans. Christine is from Southern California. She was born there, she stayed in state to go to college, and she's reportedly still living there. Could this be a sign that Dwight is bound for the Lakers? Our NBA expert as PlayerWives says yes. That expert is clearly not me.

  • Time Together: The high school sweethearts were married at the Orlando Ritz Carlton on July 5, 2008.
  • Fun Facts: The couple has one child, Jameer Jr. who most frequently goes by nicknames Meer-Meer or Deuce. News of the pregnancy broke during Jameer's freshman year at St. Joe's. Imani went into labor shortly before Jameer and team USA were entering the finals at the 2001 World Games in Japan. Rather than leave before the game and fly home for a birth which he'd probably miss anyways, Jameer played in the championship, and was able to be on the phone for the birth.

The Story

  • How they met: In a PlayerWives First, we're going to allow the lady/pornstar/rehabber to tell the whole story.
    “Yeah, Dwight and I met at LAX. I was like, you’re a basketball player, and he was like, I’ve seen you at Magic games, so he recognized me from games. I used to always get written up when I went to games for causing distractions and stuff.”
  • Fast Facts: Here's where it gets interesting(again, as told by Melky Cabrera's ex girlfriend Mary Carey):
    “Dwight’s a cool guy. For a month, we like talked on the phone, and he was always trying to give me prayers to get me out of porn and give me Bible verses to read. So then, I was going to go visit him when I was in Orlando, but I went over to this other guy’s house instead, Chris Kirkpatrick from N’Sync. And then Dwight started calling, and calling, and calling me, because he knew I was with Chris Kirkpatrick, so eventually at 3 in the morning, Chris was like don’t answer Dwight’s calls. I get a text from Dwight at 3 in the morning - I’m outside Chris’s house. I’m like oh my god, what do I do? I was like, I got Dwight here and I got Chris in the other room and I’m talking to them back and forth. So finally I had to just pull Dwight in the bathroom and tell him he needs to go home. I was like I’m really sorry, I really like you, but this isn’t the time or place. When I pull him in the bathroom, he pulls his pants down, I was like, whooa. Yeah, and so I ran and started screaming…Well if it wasn’t for the Chris thing at the time, I really liked Dwight and maybe I would have furthered this. But I was at the guy’s house I was dating so it was inappropriate. So he totally thought he totally offended me. So I saved - he and I used to talk on instant messenger, on AOL - so he was apologizing; sorry, that was out of character for me, blah blah blah. I saved all the instant messages and I’ve been putting them all in a book. So I’ve got a lot of evidence. I’ve got an evidence file.”
  • Fun Facts: We asked it the last time with the mother of Dwight's illegitimate son and caught a lot of flak for it. We'll try again:

The Story

  • UPDATE: Dwight Howard actually ended up suing Royce Reed for $9.2 million, $500 for every time that remarks that Royce made, termed "Dwight Bashing", were viewed online. We know she appeared on VH1's Basketball Wives, but we're guessing she didn't make nearly that much money...
  • How they met: Royce Reed, Dwight Howard's baby mama, was a dancer for the Magic during the 05-06 season and the two met then.
  • Fun Facts: Howard is highly religious as evidenced by many interviews and quotes. He once said he wanted to put a cross into the NBA logo. Another time, he acknowledged writing the following phrase on the wall over his bed while in high school:
    "It shall and will come to pass that the NBA will be runned by the standards of God."
    And no, the word 'runned' is not a typo by Playerwives.
    Now despite Dwight's religious fanaticism, he and Reed had a child, Braylon Joshua Robert Howard, out of wedlock in November, 2007.
    No word on how Dwight justifies that from the biblical perspective.
  • Quote: Royce Reed's mother issued the following statement after the birth of their child. "Royce and Dwight are very happy. They are very good friends. How close they are, well, you'd have to talk to them. I'm just the grandma. It was not something that was planned. It was a beautiful surprise, though."
    This happiness didn't last long as Reed ended up taking Howard to court in April, 2008 for child support. No word on how Dwight justifies failing to pay child support from the biblical perspective.
