UPDATE: 05-06-2014: Making it a priority to thank his mom, Kevin Durant's MVP acceptance speech drew tears all around. He also thanked his teammates and generally just proved why people like him more than LeBron. No mention of "taking his talents" anywhere.

UPDATE: 07-08-2013: Hopefully Kevin Durant's mother Wanda Pratt approves of his wife choice. The news hit today that Kevin Durant's fiance is Monica Wright.

A few things before we dive into this post:

1. We know it's not his wife, but we're human beings and constantly evolving. You should laud our efforts.
2. We're really doing this post, because there's still no info on who Kevin Durant is dating, or who his girlfriend is.

Look no further than Kevin's mom Wanda as the reason why Kevin is considered one of the most humble stars in the NBA and arguably all professional sports. Wanda is slowly joining the ranks of NBA mothers we recognize at NBA games (with the captain of this team being Ray Allen's mom). Wanda who worked at the postal service, gave birth to Kevin before she married Kevin's father Wayne Pratt. This led to Kevin taking his mother's maiden name as his last name. Wayne would eventually leave Wanda, Kevin and Kevin's brother Tony before Kevin's first birthday leaving all the heavy lifting, i.e. raising two boys, to Wanda. Stop me if you've heard that story before about an NBA player. Being raised by a single parent, usually the mom, is sadly probably in 80% of the bios of NBA players.

When Kevin turned 9 Wanda introduced him to Taras Brown, the man who would become Kevin's mentor and train him throughout his youth. With Wanda's discipline at home and Taras' training in the gym Kevin turned into the NBA star we see now. Eventually Wayne would come back into Kevin's life but Wanda always gets the credit for raising Kevin from Kevin himself. When the NBA finals get started don't be surprised if you see Wanda dancing up a storm in OKC. She is notorious for getting on the jumbotron at OKC home games which always draws a smile from her son Kevin.

Ms. Pratt, to God be the glory for the things HE has done. I am such a hugh fan of your son, to see him as humble as he is and respectfully seeing you in his life the way you are, brings tears to my eyes, continue to look to the hills from whence cometh our help and he will take good care of you.

I think at work I brag on Mr. Durant as much as you would and you are his mother, seeing him play with such pose gives me great joy for him, it lets me know that his train of thought has been well trained.

I watch every game, read every blog and cheer for him like I was at the game in person. Loved the short video of you and your son commiucating and you asked if your picture remains on his night stand.

Continue to keep your hands upon his life and know that I pray God anointing and his hands of blessings will remain with both of you.

Sincerely, one of his biggest fans in Bartow Florida.

    GO OKC

    Respectflly,

    Pamela Young

I echo those sentiments as well Pamela. It's a pleasure to see him play the way he does, and the composure he has. He is a classy young man. My husband and I are his biggest fans as well. He walks the walk and talk the talk where it matters.
You don't always have to show arrogance, and that in your face type of attitude.
Glad to see his family is always out there supporting him. He shows great leadership on his team, and a great example for his team. I will continue to wish his family all the best, continued guidance, and success always.

    Go OKC...Go OKC..!!!
    Regards..The Simms Family

Just read the story of Kevin's mom. My hat goes off to you Wanda. I know how important it is for boys to have their fathers in their lives. The Mom does her part, but as they become teenagers they need that male figure to instill certain values. But kudos to you Wanda..you hung in there and look what the fruits of your labor produced. One of the most respected BB players in the U.S.. I wonder how his dad feels right now, about the turnout. I have a teenage son and I can see where that male figure can make a difference. You have raised a wonderful young man, and God bless you for that. It is a pleasure to see you both after each game showing your love and respect for each other. I can see Kevin is a focused young man. He just have to be careful of those people who want to be around him because of who he is. Becareful of those opportunist chicks. Make sure you screen them really good, and also bring something to the table.!!

  5. andrea simms

SLS I totally agree. All these chicks are out looking for a meal ticket..these brothers need to send them packing..too many free loading females out there.

Why is it that with most Black athletes their Mothers weight more than the Atheltes - and usually by a LARGE margin.

  8. Pamela Lewis

You are truly an inspiration to all! The love that you share with your son is true and truly have enjoyed your interviews. I am currently a Postal Worker raising a 7 yr old son as a single parent, I truly appreciate your words of

encouragement. I only hope and pray that my son is half the man that your son has become. God Bless you and your family.

  9. Miss Mary

    Wanda,

I'm a 45 year old married woman with 3 kids. I'm also a school counselor at Adams Elementary in Norman Oklahoma. One of my favorite things about being a Thunder fan has been watching the honor your son has shown you. I want you to know that I've started praying for you and your son, about the woman God has chosen for Kevin. I am praying that Kevin will be patient and expect God to provide that woman, just as God has provided his phenomenal talent, and phenomenal mother.

    Sincerely, Mary Boren, Norman Oklahoma.

WANDA YOU ARE AN INSPIRATION TO US ALL NOT BCUZ HE PLAYS IN THE NBA BECAUSE HE KNOWS HOW TO ACT IN PUBLIC LOL AS MY MOMS SAYS

  13. Michael

Wanda did a phenomenal job raising Kevin, and I give her a lot of credit for all of the mountains she climbed, but she must be the biggest pain in the ass. I'm sure whomever Kevin marries, if ever, needs to understand that she'll be marrying BOTH of them.

It's cute that she goes to all of the games, and that Kevin gives her a kiss at the end of each match, but wow, give your son some air.

  14. jel lee mae durant

a wonderful and great mom!! Your lucky for having a mom like her in your life. Now i know and understand why you love my mother in law so much ...love you mommy wanda!!!

  15. Felicia Howard

Mrs. Pratt, I applaud you for being there to support Kevin. I know it means a lot for him to look in the stands and see his #1 fan cheering him on. I honor you for raising him to be the humble man that he is today. I have never seen another NBA player hug and kiss their mom after every game, that is wonderful. There is nothing like a mother's love for her child, God bless you always!!

  16. Ms Janet

From Forestville md your son has bought joy and the sports to my life. You have done a wonderful job raising your children and god has blessed you, not because of his career I speak of the man he has become..A role model and his references to his relationship to the lord. His love for you is all over his face in the photos that you take.He might play for okc ,but I can only feel pride to have Kevin from pg.I hope to meet him one day.He knows from where his blessing flows.

  17. Leslie

Wanda, you clearly had your priorities straight and you did an amazing job in raising your family. I have met Kevin and he is every bit as special as he seems. God bless you for setting such a fine example for the rest of us!!

May the good LORD be praised for eternity!!! Ms. Pratt, I am proud of you as child of god, a woman and a mother. I am myself a mother with 3 children and I have many struggles. However, after watching Kevin's 05/06/14 speech, my hopes keep adding up. My faith is in the LORD, but hearing your son got it multiply to the ninth power. May GOD bless you and your family!
