Charles Barkley is the man. He speaks his mind, and he’s not afraid to talk about things that many shy away from. Charles Barkley’s wife Maureen Blumhardt has been married to him for 25 years, and their daughter was also born the same year they were married. At the time, Barkley was playing for Philadelphia, and apparently the marriage was unpopular in some areas of Philly because it was a mixed-race marriage. Maureen and Charles never had a moment’s doubt about that though.
At the time of Charles and wife Maureen’s marriage, Barkley mused to the Philly Inquirer about how marriage changes a guy’s life. He explained how he would hang out with friends and play golf more often when he was single, but after he got married he had to vacuum and do household chores. He said he was scared of marriage since he’d never seen a successful one, but obviously he’s pretty good at it, looking back. Interestingly, his agent at the time stole a lot of money from him and was fired, then the guy filed for bankruptcy. Better let Maureen handle the finances, Chuck.
Maureen is a funny woman. When she had their daughter, she had a different memory of Charles’ emotional state than he did. A reporter asked him if he was nervous, and when he said not at all, she asked him what he was talking about and said, “Charles was white if that’s any indication.” Their fear of a media circus led them to a very private wedding in front of a judge. I’m not sure if that’s even considered a wedding, but I like that they didn’t do the whole song and dance– it seems way overrated in America. According to Maureen, Charles is actually a neat freak. She was quoted by the Inquirer: “Last week, Charles got up in the middle of the night and started vacuuming. I told him he was going a little overboard.” I would never have pegged Barkley as a neat freak.
