The Story
- It really shouldn't surprise anyone that Roy Williams wanted to come to the University of North Carolina to coach when he moved on from Kansas. Roy spent two years on the UNC JV basketball team under Dean Smith before returning to serve as an assistant coach under Smith for the better part of a decade.
However, aside from the career implications, there was one other important point in his history at Chapel Hill that was calling him home. UNC coach Roy Williams met his future wife, Wanda while attending UNC at Chapel Hill, where she graduated in 1972, same year as Roy. The two were married in 1973, and have two children: son Scott and daughter Kimberly.
Like so many of the wives of coaches we've covered before, Wanda has dedicated much of her spare time to charitable endeavors. The Williams sit on the board of the Carolina Covenant, who strives to help make a debt free college education a reality for low income students. The couple has personally donated more than $200,000 to the foundation, while also serving as honorary co-chairs to a $10,000,000 endowment campaign.
